Job Description

The Ramsey County Department of Property Records and Revenue is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Surveying Technician to join our team. No prior experience is required – we are looking for individuals eager to learn the fundamentals of land surveying and property record management. This is an entry-level position designed to provide comprehensive on-the-job training, mentorship, and professional development. You will work alongside experienced professionals, gaining hands-on experience in field surveying techniques, data collection, and the use of modern surveying equipment. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Surveying Technicians and licensed land surveyors with various field activities, including property boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction staking.
  • Learn to operate and maintain basic surveying equipment, such as total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors, under direct supervision.
  • Collect and record accurate field data, measurements, and observations as instructed.
  • Help set up and break down surveying equipment at job sites.
  • Perform basic office tasks, including data entry and organizing field notes.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental guidelines.
  • Participate in training sessions and actively seek to expand knowledge of surveying principles and practices.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, both in the field and in the office.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Strong desire to learn and develop a career in surveying.
  • Basic mathematical aptitude.
  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to walk, stand, lift up to 50 pounds, and carry equipment over uneven terrain.
  • Valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in geography, cartography, or land management.
  • Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with basic hand tools or outdoor manual labor.
