Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Virtual Legal Aide to join our Public Defender’s Office team. This is a fully remote, work-from-home (WFH) opportunity, offering a chance to contribute meaningfully to access to justice from anywhere in Ontario. As a Virtual Legal Aide, you will play a crucial support role in assisting our lawyers and clients, ensuring the smooth operation of legal processes. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about public service and eager to learn the intricacies of the legal system. Full training will be provided to ensure your success in this vital role.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting intake interviews and gathering preliminary information from clients.
- Organizing and maintaining client files, both physical and electronic.
- Assisting with document preparation, including drafting basic correspondence and legal forms.
- Scheduling appointments and managing calendars for legal staff.
- Responding to client inquiries and providing empathetic support.
- Performing legal research under the supervision of a lawyer.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality of all client and case information.
- Coordinating with court staff, external agencies, and community partners.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and comfortable with learning new legal software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team.
- Demonstrated empathy, discretion, and a commitment to client confidentiality.
- Access to a reliable internet connection and a suitable home office environment.
- Passion for social justice and helping underserved communities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in legal studies, paralegal studies, or a related field.
- Familiarity with case management software.
- Fluency in French or other additional languages relevant to Ontario's diverse population.
- Previous volunteer experience in a legal or social service setting.
