Job Description
Join the Gladstone Regional Council as a Water Quality Intern and gain invaluable hands-on experience in the critical field of environmental management and public health. This entry-level placement offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the monitoring and maintenance of our region’s vital water resources. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning about water treatment processes, regulatory compliance, and the scientific methods used to ensure our community has access to clean and safe water. Key Responsibilities
- Assist in collecting water samples from various sources including treatment plants, reservoirs, and distribution networks.
- Conduct basic laboratory tests and analyses on water samples under supervision, ensuring accuracy and adherence to protocols.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of sample collection, test results, and environmental data for reporting purposes.
- Support field investigations related to water quality issues and environmental monitoring programs.
- Learn about water quality regulations, standards, and reporting requirements relevant to Australian contexts.
- Assist in preparing reports and presentations on water quality data and findings.
- Participate actively in team meetings and contribute to ongoing projects aimed at improving water quality and operational efficiency.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and environmental guidelines established by the Council.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree program in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, Civil Engineering, or a related scientific/technical field.
- Strong interest in water quality management and environmental protection.
- Basic understanding of scientific principles and laboratory procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (academic or volunteer) in a laboratory setting or field sampling techniques.
- Knowledge of Australian drinking water quality guidelines (e.g., ADWG).
- Current Queensland Provisional P2 or Open Driver's License.
