Job Description

We are seeking a highly meticulous and detail-oriented WFH Proofreader to join our editorial team. This is a 100% remote position, offering the flexibility to work from the comfort of your home anywhere in Australia, with a preference for candidates residing in Western Australia. While previous professional proofreading experience is not strictly required, a keen eye for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency is absolutely essential. You will be instrumental in ensuring the highest quality of our published materials across various genres, working on diverse projects from fiction and non-fiction books to marketing collateral. Full training will be provided to the successful candidate, equipping you with the specific tools and workflows required for success within our publishing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly review manuscripts, galleys, and other textual materials for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and word usage.
  • Verify factual information, names, dates, and other data for accuracy against provided source materials.
  • Ensure consistency in style, formatting, and adherence to house style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style).
  • Identify and mark inconsistencies in layout, typography, and page numbering.
  • Collaborate with editors and authors to clarify queries and implement corrections efficiently.
  • Manage multiple proofreading projects simultaneously, adhering to deadlines and quality standards.
  • Maintain meticulous records of corrections and editorial changes.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a methodical approach to tasks.
  • Strong command of the English language, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods and identify minute errors.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs).
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently in a remote environment.
  • A passion for reading and a keen interest in the publishing industry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with various style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA).
  • Experience with proofreading marks and annotation tools (e.g., Adobe Acrobat markup).
  • A degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent life experience).
  • Basic understanding of publishing workflows and editorial processes.
