Job Description
The Zoology & Animal Husbandry Intern will gain hands-on experience in the daily care and management of animals within our various enclosure types. This entry-level internship provides a unique opportunity to learn fundamental principles of animal welfare, behavior observation, nutrition, and habitat maintenance under the guidance of experienced animal care professionals. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about zoology, veterinary science, or animal behavior who are eager to contribute to the well-being of animals and learn practical skills in a dynamic environment. Full training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily feeding, watering, and enrichment activities for various animal species.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment.
- Observe and document animal behavior, reporting any changes or concerns to senior staff.
- Aid in preparing specialized diets according to established protocols.
- Participate in habitat construction, modification, and enrichment creation projects.
- Learn and apply proper animal handling techniques for various species.
- Support inventory management of supplies, feed, and equipment.
- Engage in educational activities and discussions with staff to deepen understanding of animal welfare science and husbandry practices.
Required Skills
- Passion for animals and a strong interest in zoology or animal husbandry.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team-oriented setting.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, bending, and reaching.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- Commitment to learning and adhering to safety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program related to zoology, biology, veterinary technology, animal science, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer experience with animals in a shelter, rescue, or wildlife setting.
- Basic knowledge of animal behavior and welfare principles.
