Job Description
Are you passionate about animals, particularly the fascinating world of aquatic and exotic pets? Pet Valu in Oshawa is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Aquarium & Exotic Pet Store Assistant to join our team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to learn and grow in a dynamic retail environment. You will play a crucial role in the daily care and well-being of our diverse range of animals, while also providing exceptional customer service and support to pet parents. Full training will be provided to ensure your success in this rewarding role.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily feeding, cleaning, and health checks for aquatic, reptile, and small animal residents.
- Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of all animal enclosures, aquariums, and terrariums according to strict standards.
- Monitor water quality parameters for aquariums and implement necessary adjustments.
- Assist customers with product selection, offering informed advice on pet care, nutrition, and habitat setup.
- Process sales transactions accurately, handle cash, and manage inventory as needed.
- Unpack, stock, and organize merchandise, ensuring shelves are well-maintained and appealing.
- Educate customers on responsible pet ownership, animal husbandry, and specific care requirements for various species.
- Participate in ongoing training sessions to enhance product knowledge and animal care expertise.
- Assist with receiving and properly settling in new animal arrivals.
Required Skills
- Genuine passion for animals, especially aquatic, reptile, and small exotic pets.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Strong ability to learn and adapt to new information and procedures quickly.
- Reliable, punctual, and possesses a strong work ethic.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Basic computer literacy for point-of-sale systems and inventory management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a retail or customer service environment.
- Basic knowledge or experience with aquatic or exotic pet care (e.g., fish, snakes, hamsters).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
