Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and culturally aware Indigenous Liaison Officer to join our Community Development team. This critical role will be instrumental in strengthening relationships between Maribyrnong City Council and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within our municipality. You will facilitate effective communication, promote cultural understanding, and advocate for the needs and aspirations of Indigenous residents, ensuring their voices are heard and incorporated into Council initiatives and decision-making processes. This is an opportunity to make a tangible difference in fostering reconciliation and enhancing community well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a primary point of contact and liaison between Maribyrnong City Council and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Elders, and organisations.
- Facilitate and support consultation processes with Indigenous communities on Council projects, policies, and services.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance the participation and representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in local government.
- Advise Council staff and departments on culturally appropriate engagement practices and protocols.
- Assist in the development and review of Council's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
- Organise and support cultural events and initiatives that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and promote understanding within the broader community.
- Provide advocacy and support for Indigenous residents accessing Council and external services.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and correspondence related to Indigenous community engagement and outcomes.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong, respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Experience in community engagement, consultation, or advocacy roles.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Sound organisational and administrative skills.
- Current Victorian Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Community Development, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
- Previous experience working within a local government or similar public sector environment.
- Knowledge of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations and networks in Maribyrnong or surrounding areas.
