Job Description
Are you passionate about marine life and eager to gain hands-on experience in the fascinating world of ichthyology and aquarium husbandry? The Cox Science Center and Aquarium is offering an exciting Ichthyology & Aquarium Maintenance Internship. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals looking to start their career in marine biology or animal care, providing comprehensive training in all aspects of fish health, exhibit maintenance, and aquatic system management. No prior professional experience is required; we are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated learners ready to dive in. You will work closely with our experienced aquarists and educators, contributing to the daily care of our diverse aquatic collections and the operational excellence of our exhibits.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist aquarists with daily feeding and observation of various fish species.
- Learn and perform routine aquarium maintenance tasks, including water quality testing, filtration system checks, and exhibit cleaning.
- Support the medical care and conditioning of aquatic animals under supervision.
- Help maintain accurate animal husbandry records.
- Participate in the preparation of diets and enrichment activities for fish.
- Assist with exhibit enhancements and new animal introductions as needed.
- Learn about water chemistry, life support systems, and disease prevention in aquatic environments.
- Engage with visitors and assist with educational programs related to marine life when opportunities arise.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in marine biology, ichthyology, or related fields
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent attention to detail and observational skills
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic
- Willingness to learn new tasks and follow instructions carefully
- Comfortable working in and around water, and performing physical tasks
- Effective communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Marine Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Basic understanding of aquatic ecosystems
- Prior volunteer experience in an aquarium, zoo, or science center setting
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
