Job Description

The City of Elizabeth Department of Public Works is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our Street Maintenance team. In this vital role, you will contribute to the cleanliness and upkeep of our city’s streets, sidewalks, and public areas. This position involves a variety of manual labor tasks essential for maintaining a high quality of life for Elizabeth residents. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general street cleaning duties, including sweeping, litter collection, and debris removal.
  • Operate various hand tools and light equipment for maintenance tasks (e.g., rakes, shovels, blowers).
  • Assist with routine maintenance of city parks, public grounds, and municipal properties.
  • Participate in seasonal duties such as leaf collection, snow removal, and street sweeping.
  • Report any hazards, damage, or issues observed on public property to supervisors.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines for operating equipment and performing tasks.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment and properly store tools and equipment.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
  • Basic understanding of safety procedures and willingness to follow all safety protocols.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid New Jersey Driver's License and a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Previous experience in landscaping, construction, or general labor.
  • Familiarity with operating small power tools (e.g., leaf blowers, weed trimmers).
  • Knowledge of basic street maintenance practices.
