Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Animal Care Assistant to join our vital team at the Banbury Rehoming Centre. This role is crucial in ensuring the daily well-being, comfort, and health of all animals under our care, including cats, dogs, and smaller domestic animals. You will be involved in a variety of tasks, from feeding and cleaning to monitoring health and assisting with enrichment activities. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily feeding, watering, and medication administration as directed by veterinary staff or senior animal care assistants.
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, catteries, and other animal housing areas to maintain high standards of hygiene.
  • Monitor the health and behaviour of all animals, reporting any concerns or changes promptly to senior staff.
  • Assist with animal enrichment activities, including supervised playtime, grooming, and socialisation.
  • Handle animals safely and compassionately, following established protocols and individual care plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care, feeding, medication, and behaviour.
  • Support the veterinary team during examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Assist with the preparation of animals for rehoming, including bathing and basic grooming.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, volunteers, and the public.
  • Undertake general duties to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the centre.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 6 months experience in an animal care environment (professional or extensive volunteer).
  • Demonstrated passion for animal welfare and a strong understanding of animal behaviour.
  • Ability to handle animals safely and confidently, including those that may be nervous or challenging.
  • Excellent observation skills and attention to detail for monitoring animal health and behaviour.
  • Good physical fitness, as the role involves lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, responsible, and a strong work ethic.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in Animal Care or a related field.
  • Knowledge of animal first aid.
  • Previous experience working in a rehoming centre or veterinary clinic.
  • Full UK driving license.
