Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Geography & GIS Mapping Intern to join our team in Gastonia, NC. This internship offers a unique opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, data collection, and spatial analysis within a professional environmental consulting setting. You will work alongside experienced GIS professionals and environmental scientists, contributing to real-world projects from conceptualization to completion. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about geography, environmental science, and technology, looking to apply their academic knowledge in a practical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the collection, organization, and maintenance of geospatial data from various sources.
- Perform data entry, geocoding, and data quality assurance to ensure accuracy.
- Utilize GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) to create, edit, and update maps, layers, and spatial databases.
- Support the development of map products, reports, and presentations for client projects.
- Conduct basic spatial analysis to support environmental assessments and land use planning.
- Collaborate with project managers and other team members on various tasks as needed.
- Learn and apply best practices for GIS data management and cartographic design.
Required Skills
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, GIS, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of GIS principles and concepts.
- Familiarity with at least one GIS software package (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior coursework or project experience with spatial analysis techniques.
- Experience with GPS data collection.
