Job Description

Are you looking to kickstart a rewarding career in public service with no prior experience? The Florida Department of Revenue is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Trainee Value Add Tax (VAT/Sales Tax) Inspectors. This is an entry-level position designed to provide comprehensive training in tax law, auditing principles, and compliance procedures. You will learn how to analyze tax returns, conduct investigations, and assist businesses in understanding and adhering to Florida’s sales tax regulations, all under the guidance of experienced professionals. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in a structured training program covering state tax laws, auditing techniques, and investigative procedures.
  • Assist senior inspectors with basic tax return analysis and documentation review, learning to interpret financial records.
  • Learn to identify discrepancies and potential non-compliance issues in sales tax filings through guided practice.
  • Accompany experienced inspectors on field visits to businesses for observational learning and practical experience.
  • Communicate effectively with taxpayers to explain tax laws and procedures, as guided and mentored.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare preliminary reports as part of the training process, adhering to departmental standards.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Florida Department of Revenue's mission, operational standards, and ethical guidelines.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen eye for detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for clear and concise interactions
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, email, internet)
  • Ability to learn complex legal and financial concepts quickly and adapt to new information
  • High level of integrity, ethical conduct, and discretion
  • Valid Florida Driver's License upon hire (or ability to obtain shortly after)
  • Willingness to undergo a comprehensive background check and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field (or currently pursuing)
  • Previous experience in customer service, administrative support, or a detail-oriented role
