Job Description

NIPSCO is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Public Policy Intern to join our dynamic Government Relations team in Hammond, IN. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the energy sector’s policy and legislative landscape. You will support our efforts to monitor, analyze, and engage with public policy issues at local, state, and federal levels. This role is ideal for a student eager to learn about government affairs, build professional networks, and contribute to impactful projects that shape the future of energy in Indiana. Full training and mentorship will be provided to help you succeed in this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and analysis on legislative proposals, regulatory changes, and public policy trends relevant to the energy industry.
  • Assist the Government Relations team in preparing briefings, presentations, and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the coordination of meetings and events with government officials, community leaders, and industry partners.
  • Help track legislative activity and policy developments using various monitoring tools.
  • Draft correspondence, memos, and other communications materials.
  • Provide administrative support to the Government Relations department as needed.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to strategic discussions on policy initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Economics, Communications, or a related field.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information clearly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated interest in public policy, government affairs, or the energy sector.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a student organization, volunteer role, or part-time job involving research, communication, or advocacy.
  • Basic understanding of the legislative or regulatory process.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
