Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and organized Virtual Legal Aide to join our Public Defender’s Office. This is a fully remote (WFH) position, offering the opportunity to contribute significantly to our mission from the comfort of your home. The Virtual Legal Aide will provide essential administrative and legal support to our attorneys, assisting with case management, document preparation, and client communication. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of legal proceedings and delivering effective representation to our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys with case preparation, including organizing discovery, drafting basic legal documents, and maintaining electronic files.
  • Conduct preliminary legal research using online databases and other resources.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, court personnel, and other stakeholders via phone, email, and virtual platforms.
  • Manage and track court deadlines and attorney calendars.
  • Prepare and format legal correspondence, reports, and presentations.
  • Transcribe dictations and meeting minutes as needed.
  • Ensure confidentiality and secure handling of all client information and sensitive documents.
  • Provide general administrative support to the legal team as required.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote environment
  • Familiarity with legal terminology and processes (can be learned on the job)
  • High level of discretion and ability to handle confidential information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, or a related field
  • Previous experience (internship or paid) in a legal or administrative support role
  • Experience with case management software (e.g., Clio, MyCase)
  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English) is a plus
