Job Description

Are you eager to start a career in civil engineering but lack prior experience? The Town of Gravenhurst is offering an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Civil Engineering Assistant within our Public Works department. This fully paid training program is designed to equip you with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required for a successful career in municipal civil engineering. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning about infrastructure planning, construction, maintenance, and project management. No prior experience is required – just a strong willingness to learn and a passion for community development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior engineers and technicians with data collection, surveys, and site inspections for various public works projects.
  • Learn to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and project documents.
  • Support the preparation of reports, permits, and other administrative documentation.
  • Participate in fieldwork related to roads, bridges, water systems, wastewater systems, and stormwater management.
  • Help maintain and organize project files and records.
  • Operate and maintain basic surveying and testing equipment under supervision.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Engage actively in all provided training sessions and mentorship opportunities.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new concepts.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A valid G class driver's license with a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education or enrollment in a relevant field (e.g., civil engineering technology, construction) is an asset but not required.
  • Familiarity with basic drafting or CAD software is an asset.
  • Previous experience in a physical outdoor work environment.
