Job Description
Are you looking to start a rewarding career in healthcare? Hamilton Health Sciences is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals to join our team as Hospital Porters. This is an entry-level, full-time position offering comprehensive training for motivated candidates with no prior experience required. As a Hospital Porter, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our hospital environment, directly contributing to patient care and comfort. We are committed to providing you with all the necessary skills and support to succeed in this essential role.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely and efficiently transport patients via wheelchair, bed, or stretcher to various departments (e.g., appointments, operating rooms, wards) throughout the hospital.
- Move equipment, specimens, medical records, and supplies between different areas of the facility as required.
- Assist with the transfer of patients from beds to stretchers/wheelchairs and vice versa, following proper safety protocols.
- Respond promptly to requests from medical staff and departments, prioritizing urgent transfers.
- Maintain cleanliness and functionality of transport equipment, reporting any malfunctions or damage.
- Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including infection control, patient confidentiality, and safety regulations.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with patients, visitors, and staff members.
- Assist with morgue transfers, ensuring dignity and respect.
Required Skills
- Ability to push, pull, and lift heavy loads (patients, equipment) for extended periods.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individuals.
- Reliability and punctuality with a strong work ethic.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively as part of a team.
- Empathy and a compassionate attitude towards patients and their families.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand schedules and complete simple documentation.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to a fast-paced hospital environment.
- Physical fitness to meet the demands of the role.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a customer service or physically demanding role is an asset, but not required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
