Job Description
Join the vital team at the North Carolina Highway Patrol as a State/Provincial Highway Patrol Dispatcher, specializing in night shifts. This is an entry-level opportunity where comprehensive training will be provided to equip you with the skills needed to excel. As a dispatcher, you will be the crucial link between emergency calls and our troopers on patrol, responsible for dispatching units, monitoring radio traffic, and providing essential information during critical situations. Your ability to remain calm under pressure and communicate clearly will directly impact the safety of both our officers and the public we serve. This role is based on-site in Charlotte and is essential for maintaining continuous public safety operations, particularly during overnight hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and evaluate emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and other agencies.
- Dispatch appropriate North Carolina Highway Patrol units to incident locations efficiently.
- Monitor multiple radio channels and maintain constant communication with troopers in the field.
- Accurately document all calls, dispatches, and significant events in dispatch logs and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Provide critical information to responding units, including location details, suspect descriptions, and hazard warnings.
- Maintain composure and effective communication during high-stress situations.
- Operate various communication equipment, including radios, telephones, and computer systems.
- Assist troopers with vehicle registration inquiries, driver's license checks, and other database searches.
- Notify appropriate agencies and personnel in the event of major incidents or emergencies.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and ethical standards.
Required Skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Exceptional active listening skills to gather critical information quickly.
- Strong ability to multitask in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities under stress.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn specialized dispatch software.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to work night shifts, including weekends and holidays, as scheduled.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in customer service or a related field requiring public interaction.
- Some college coursework or a degree in Criminal Justice, Communications, or a related field.
- Familiarity with geographical areas and road networks within North Carolina.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus.
