Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Art Conservator (Assistant) to join our esteemed conservation team. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about art and eager to build a career in art conservation. You will work closely with senior conservators, gaining invaluable hands-on experience across a diverse range of artworks and conservation projects. Full training will be provided, focusing on foundational conservation practices, ethical considerations, documentation, and the application of various treatment methodologies. This role is a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of significant artistic heritage while developing specialized skills in a supportive professional environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior conservators with comprehensive condition assessments and technical analysis of artworks.
  • Perform basic conservation treatments, including surface cleaning, minor structural repairs, and stabilization under direct supervision.
  • Prepare detailed photographic and written documentation of artwork conditions and treatment procedures.
  • Support the management and organization of the conservation studio, including inventory of supplies and equipment maintenance.
  • Aid in the safe handling, packing, and transportation of artworks.
  • Conduct research on art materials, historical techniques, and conservation methodologies.
  • Contribute to team meetings and discussions regarding ongoing projects and ethical considerations.
  • Adhere to strict health, safety, and ethical conservation guidelines at all times.

Required Skills

  • A strong foundational interest and knowledge in art history, fine arts, or cultural heritage.
  • Exceptional fine motor skills and manual dexterity for detailed work.
  • High level of attention to detail, precision, and patience.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and follow instructions meticulously.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and challenges.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Art Conservation, Fine Arts, Art History, Chemistry, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Prior experience (academic, internship, or volunteer) in a museum, gallery, or conservation studio setting is beneficial but not required.
  • Familiarity with various art materials and their degradation processes.
  • Basic knowledge of photographic documentation techniques.
  • First Aid certification.
