Job Description

Join The National Trust as a Botanist and play a vital role in surveying, monitoring, and conserving the diverse plant life across our Surrey properties. This role involves extensive fieldwork, data analysis, and contributing to conservation management plans. You will work closely with conservation teams, land managers, and volunteers to protect and enhance biodiversity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct botanical surveys and habitat assessments using various methodologies.
  • Identify and record plant species, including rare and protected flora.
  • Monitor plant populations and communities over time to assess ecological health.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of conservation management plans.
  • Analyse and interpret botanical data, preparing detailed reports and recommendations.
  • Provide expert botanical advice to land management teams and project leaders.
  • Engage with volunteers and local communities, sharing knowledge and fostering appreciation for plant conservation.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to national biodiversity databases.

Required Skills

  • Strong plant identification skills, particularly for British flora.
  • Proficiency in ecological survey techniques.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in varied outdoor conditions.
  • A full UK driving license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Botany, Ecology, Conservation, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific botanical recording schemes (e.g., BSBI).
  • Knowledge of conservation legislation relevant to plant species and habitats.
  • Experience supervising volunteers or junior staff.
