Job Description

Stantec is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Environmental Sampling Assistant for field work in the Sydney, Nova Scotia region. This is an entry-level position perfect for individuals eager to start a career in environmental science, with full training provided. You will be an integral part of our field teams, assisting with crucial environmental data collection for various projects. This role involves significant outdoor work in diverse conditions and requires a strong commitment to safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior environmental staff with field sampling activities, including soil, water, air, and sediment collection.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment under supervision, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
  • Accurately document field observations, data, and sample collection details.
  • Prepare and label samples for laboratory analysis, adhering to strict chain-of-custody protocols.
  • Conduct basic site reconnaissance and assist with site specific health and safety planning.
  • Transport equipment and samples to and from project sites.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and company policies.
  • Participate in site clean-up and demobilization activities.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and report preparation.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to workplace safety.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrollment in or completion of a diploma/degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, or a related field (not required, but an asset).
  • Basic knowledge of environmental sampling techniques.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with GPS units or other field navigation tools.
