Job Description

We are seeking an outstanding and dedicated Housemaster / Housemistress to lead and nurture our boarding house community. This pivotal on-site role involves comprehensive pastoral care, ensuring the welfare, personal development, and academic progress of students in a supportive and structured environment. The successful candidate will be a compassionate leader, an effective manager, and a crucial point of contact for students, parents, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations and management of the boarding house, ensuring a safe and supportive living environment.
  • Provide exceptional pastoral care, guidance, and support to all students within the house, addressing their individual needs and concerns.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful community atmosphere that encourages student growth and wellbeing.
  • Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of residential staff, ensuring high standards of care and supervision.
  • Maintain regular and effective communication with parents, guardians, teachers, and senior school administration regarding student progress and welfare.
  • Organise and oversee a variety of engaging extracurricular activities and social events for students.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all school policies, particularly those pertaining to student safety, safeguarding, and child protection.
  • Manage budgets related to house operations and activities.
  • Act as a key liaison for student disciplinary matters, working in conjunction with school leadership.
  • Be resident within the provided accommodation to ensure constant availability and oversight of the house.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience of at least 3 years in a pastoral care role, boarding house management, or a similar residential setting, preferably within an educational context.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills, with the ability to build rapport with young people, staff, and parents.
  • Strong leadership, organisational, and administrative abilities, capable of managing multiple priorities effectively.
  • A genuine ability to act as a positive role model and mentor, inspiring trust and confidence in students.
  • A thorough understanding of safeguarding and child protection protocols, with a commitment to student welfare.
  • Current First Aid certification or a willingness to undertake relevant training upon appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE) or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working within an independent school setting.
  • Experience with residential student programs and an understanding of the unique challenges and rewards of boarding life.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, wellbeing strategies, and educational psychology.
