Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and visionary Lead Game Designer to join our dynamic team in York. As a Lead Game Designer, you will be instrumental in defining the creative vision and guiding the design execution of our next generation of games. You will lead a talented team of designers, collaborating closely with art, programming, and production to deliver innovative, engaging, and high-quality player experiences. This role requires a blend of hands-on design expertise, strong leadership skills, and a deep understanding of game mechanics, player psychology, and market trends.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of game designers, fostering a collaborative and creative environment.
- Define, communicate, and evangelize the game's core vision, mechanics, and design pillars.
- Develop and maintain detailed design documentation, including game design documents (GDDs), feature specifications, and user stories.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with art, programming, audio, and QA teams to ensure successful implementation of design features.
- Oversee the prototyping, iteration, and balancing of game systems, levels, and features.
- Conduct competitive analysis and research to identify market trends and innovative design opportunities.
- Gather and integrate player feedback, analytics, and playtest data to refine game design.
- Participate in recruitment and performance management of design team members.
- Act as a key stakeholder in the product development lifecycle from concept to live operations.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 6 years experience in game design, with at least 2 years in a Lead or Senior Designer role.
- Proven track record of shipping at least one commercially successful title in a leadership design capacity.
- Exceptional understanding of game design principles, player psychology, and usability.
- Proficiency with game development tools and engines (e.g., Unity, Unreal Engine).
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to articulate complex design concepts clearly and concisely.
- Experience with iterative design processes and agile development methodologies.
- A deep passion for video games across various genres and platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Game Design, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience with live service games and monetization strategies.
- Familiarity with data analytics and A/B testing in game development.
- Portfolio demonstrating a range of design work, including systems design, level design, and narrative design examples.
