Job Description
Toledo Public Schools is seeking a passionate and dedicated Music Director / Band Teacher to lead our instrumental music program. This full-time position involves teaching various levels of band, directing concerts, and fostering a love for music in our students. The ideal candidate will have strong pedagogical skills, a solid understanding of music theory and performance, and the ability to inspire young musicians. We are looking for a collaborative educator who can build a vibrant and inclusive music community within our school. Certification of Sponsorship (CoS) is available for eligible international candidates who meet our requirements, demonstrating our commitment to attracting top talent globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging curriculum for instrumental music classes (e.g., concert band, jazz band, marching band).
- Conduct rehearsals and direct performances for school concerts, community events, and competitions.
- Teach fundamental music theory, sight-reading, and instrumental techniques.
- Recruit and retain students for the band program, promoting participation across all grade levels.
- Manage and maintain band equipment and inventory.
- Collaborate with other faculty members and school administration on school-wide events and initiatives.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and program activities.
- Ensure student safety and well-being during all rehearsals and performances.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field.
- Valid Ohio teaching license or eligibility for licensure (CoS available for international candidates).
- Proficiency in directing various band ensembles.
- Strong instrumental performance skills (primary instrument required).
- Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Music, Music Education, or related field.
- Previous experience as a Music Director or Band Teacher at the K-12 level.
- Experience with marching band or jazz band direction.
- Familiarity with music technology and software.
- Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
