Job Description
The National Aviary is offering an exciting internship opportunity for individuals passionate about ornithology and avian conservation. This intern will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of bird banding, data collection, and avian research within a dynamic aviary environment. This is an entry-level position designed for learning, and comprehensive training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist experienced ornithologists with bird capture, handling, and banding protocols.
- Accurately record and manage bird biometric data.
- Learn and apply techniques for avian health assessment during banding.
- Participate in habitat surveys and bird monitoring activities.
- Contribute to data entry and preliminary analysis under supervision.
- Maintain banding equipment and field supplies.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and animal welfare protocols.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in ornithology, wildlife biology, or environmental science.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Willingness to learn and follow detailed protocols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills (data entry).
- Physical ability to walk, stand, and carry equipment for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in or recent graduate of a related scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science).
- Previous volunteer experience with wildlife or in a research setting.
- Familiarity with bird identification (visual and auditory).
