Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Packaging Engineer to join our innovative team in Harrisonburg, VA. This role is crucial in designing, developing, and optimizing packaging solutions for our diverse range of food products, ensuring product integrity, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of packaging materials, processes, and equipment, and will be instrumental in bringing new products to market and improving existing ones. Relocation assistance will be provided for qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test new packaging solutions for various food products, considering material properties, product protection, shelf life, and consumer convenience.
- Optimize existing packaging designs for cost reduction, improved performance, sustainability, and manufacturing efficiency.
- Collaborate with R&D, Marketing, Production, and Supply Chain teams to integrate packaging requirements into new product development and launch processes.
- Conduct packaging material evaluations, supplier qualifications, and performance testing (e.g., transit, shelf-life, seal integrity).
- Develop and maintain packaging specifications, standards, and guidelines.
- Troubleshoot packaging-related issues on production lines and implement corrective actions.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, new packaging technologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead or participate in cross-functional projects aimed at continuous improvement and innovation in packaging.
- Provide technical expertise and support to internal and external stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in packaging development within the food, beverage, or consumer goods industry.
- Proficiency in packaging materials (e.g., plastics, paperboard, flexibles, glass) and their properties.
- Experience with packaging testing methodologies and equipment.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for packaging design.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Packaging Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with sustainability initiatives in packaging design (e.g., recyclability, compostability, light-weighting).
- Knowledge of high-speed packaging machinery and automation.
- Certifications such as IoPP Certified Packaging Professional (CPP).
- Familiarity with regulatory standards for food packaging (e.g., FDA, USDA).
