No prior experience operating heavy equipment is required – we provide comprehensive, paid training and all necessary certifications to help you become a skilled and certified Equipment Operator. You will learn to operate a variety of public works equipment, assist with infrastructure maintenance, and play a crucial role in keeping our community running smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in and complete all assigned paid training programs for heavy equipment operation (e.g., snowplows, excavators, loaders, graders).
  • Assist experienced Public Works operators and crew members with daily tasks and projects.
  • Perform manual labour duties as required, including shovelling, raking, lifting, and other physical tasks.
  • Learn and strictly adhere to all safety protocols, operational procedures, and municipal policies.
  • Conduct pre-operational checks and basic routine maintenance on assigned equipment under supervision.
  • Contribute to the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, and other public infrastructure.
  • Participate in seasonal operations, including snow removal, sanding, and salting.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and equipment usage.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Driver's License (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and following established procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and adapt to various work environments.
  • Physical capability to perform manual labour and lift up to 50 lbs repetitively.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude or familiarity with vehicle maintenance.
  • Previous experience working in an outdoor, all-weather environment.
  • Understanding of basic construction or public works principles.
