Job Description
As a Reptile / Exotic Pet Breeder Assistant at Reptilia Zoo, you will be an integral part of our animal care team, providing specialized support for our breeding programs and the daily well-being of our extensive reptile and exotic animal collection. This role involves meticulous attention to feeding, habitat maintenance, health monitoring, and assisting with all phases of the breeding process from egg incubation to hatchling care. You will work under the guidance of experienced zookeepers and breeders, contributing directly to the welfare and proliferation of various fascinating species in a dynamic and educational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior breeders and zookeepers with daily animal care, including feeding, watering, and cleaning enclosures for a wide variety of reptiles and exotic pets.
- Monitor animal health and behavior, accurately record observations, and report any concerns to senior staff.
- Prepare specialized diets according to strict nutritional guidelines.
- Maintain pristine habitat conditions, including temperature, humidity, and substrate, for optimal animal welfare.
- Assist with the setup and maintenance of breeding enclosures and equipment.
- Support breeding protocols, including egg incubation, hatchling care, and neonatal care.
- Handle various species of reptiles and exotic animals safely and confidently under supervision.
- Maintain detailed records of animal health, feeding, and breeding activities.
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and animal welfare regulations.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development related to exotic animal husbandry.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated passion for reptiles and exotic animals
- Ability to follow precise instructions and animal care protocols
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong observational skills
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and standing for extended periods
- Basic computer literacy for record-keeping
- A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation
- Minimum of 6 months of experience in animal care, ideally with reptiles or exotic pets, or a strong educational background in biology, zoology, or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a zoo, aquarium, pet store specializing in exotics, or similar animal care facility
- Post-secondary education in animal biology, zoology, veterinary technology, or a related discipline
- Certifications in animal first aid or reptile husbandry
- Knowledge of reptile genetics and breeding principles
