Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and reliable School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to join our facilities team. This crucial role involves maintaining the grounds and performing general handyman duties across our school properties in Alexandria, VA. The ideal candidate will ensure our outdoor spaces are safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing, while also assisting with minor indoor repairs and general upkeep. This position offers term-time options, providing flexibility that aligns with the academic calendar.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, and watering lawns and flowerbeds.
- Maintain playgrounds, sports fields, and other outdoor recreational areas, ensuring they are safe and clean.
- Conduct minor repairs to fences, gates, outdoor furniture, and playground equipment.
- Remove litter, debris, and snow/ice from pathways, entrances, and parking lots as needed.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and effectively.
- Assist with basic indoor handyman tasks such as changing light bulbs, minor plumbing fixes, and general repairs.
- Monitor and report any safety hazards or maintenance issues promptly.
- Ensure school premises are secure at all times, including locking and unlocking gates and doors.
- Support set-up and take-down for school events as required.
Required Skills
- Basic knowledge of groundskeeping and landscaping techniques.
- Proficiency in operating common groundskeeping tools and equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers).
- Ability to perform general handyman tasks and minor repairs.
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to maintenance.
- Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance or a handyman role, particularly in a school or institutional setting.
- Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Familiarity with safety procedures related to groundskeeping equipment and chemicals.
