Job Description
Stena Line is seeking an experienced and dedicated Ship Master / Captain to command our commercial vessels, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the ship, crew, cargo, and passengers. This pivotal leadership role requires a deep understanding of maritime regulations, exceptional navigational skills, and a steadfast commitment to safety and operational excellence. The successful candidate will be responsible for overall vessel management, compliance with international and national laws, and fostering a culture of high performance and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities
- Assume full command and responsibility for the vessel, its crew, passengers, and cargo.
- Ensure the highest standards of safety, security, environmental protection, and quality are maintained in line with company policies and international maritime regulations (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL).
- Direct all navigational operations, ensuring safe passage and compliance with voyage plans.
- Lead, manage, and mentor the crew, promoting a positive and professional working environment.
- Oversee maintenance programs and ensure the vessel remains seaworthy and fully operational.
- Manage vessel budgets, resources, and administrative tasks efficiently.
- Act as the primary point of contact with port authorities, pilots, and other external stakeholders.
- Conduct regular drills and training for the crew in emergency procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all flag state, port state, and coastal state requirements.
- Report incidents, accidents, and near misses in accordance with company procedures.
Required Skills
- Valid Master Mariner's Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2) Unlimited.
- Extensive command experience on commercial vessels, preferably ferries or RoRo vessels.
- In-depth knowledge of international maritime law, regulations, and codes.
- Proven leadership and crew management skills.
- Excellent navigational and vessel handling abilities.
- Strong communication and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken).
- Valid medical fitness certificate (e.g., ENG1 or equivalent).
- Understanding of safety management systems (SMS).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific vessel types in the Stena Line fleet.
- Additional maritime qualifications or certifications (e.g., ECDIS, ARPA, GMDSS).
- Experience working in diverse multicultural environments.
- Familiarity with UK/European maritime operations.
- Demonstrable commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
