Job Description

Southend-on-Sea City Council is seeking highly motivated individuals to join our Public Safety team as Telecommunicators. This is a fast-paced environment where quick thinking, calm under pressure, and exceptional communication skills are paramount. No prior experience in telecommunications is required, as we provide comprehensive, full training to equip you with all the necessary skills to excel in this vital role. You will be the first point of contact for emergency and non-emergency calls, responsible for dispatching appropriate resources and providing critical support during urgent situations. This role offers the unique opportunity to contribute directly to public safety within the Southend-on-Sea community.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls with professionalism and empathy.
- Gather critical information accurately and efficiently from callers during stressful situations.
- Prioritise calls and determine the appropriate course of action, including dispatching police, fire, or ambulance services.
- Provide clear, concise instructions to callers and emergency personnel.
- Maintain accurate records and enter data into computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Monitor multiple radio channels simultaneously and communicate effectively with field units.
- Remain calm and composed under pressure, often dealing with distressing or life-threatening situations.
- Adhere to all protocols, procedures, and regulations related to public safety communications.
