Job Description
Are you a calm, clear communicator with a strong sense of public service? The Nebraska State Patrol is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as a State/Provincial Highway Patrol Dispatcher for night shifts. This critical role is the lifeline between the public and our troopers, requiring quick thinking, exceptional multitasking, and a steady demeanor in high-pressure situations. As a night shift dispatcher, you will play a vital role in ensuring public safety across Nebraska, responding to emergency calls, dispatching personnel, and maintaining accurate records around the clock. Full training will be provided to the right candidate who demonstrates the aptitude and commitment required for this essential public safety position. This is an on-site position based in Lincoln, NE, offering a rewarding career with significant impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and process emergency (911) and non-emergency calls from the public.
- Prioritize and dispatch appropriate Highway Patrol units to incidents, accidents, and emergencies.
- Monitor multiple radio frequencies and communication systems simultaneously.
- Maintain accurate, detailed logs and records of all calls, incidents, and unit movements.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers during critical incidents.
- Relay critical information to law enforcement personnel rapidly and accurately.
- Operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and other public safety software.
- Provide support and information to troopers in the field as needed, including database lookups and information retrieval.
Required Skills
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and effective under pressure.
- Strong active listening and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in basic computer operations and data entry (minimum 35 WPM typing speed).
- Excellent multitasking and organizational skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team during night shifts.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a dispatch or high-volume call center environment.
- Knowledge of Nebraska geography and roadways.
- Familiarity with public safety protocols or terminology.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
