Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Sustainability / ESG Director to join our leadership team in Calgary, Alberta. This critical role will be instrumental in shaping and executing Suncor’s sustainability strategy, ensuring alignment with global best practices, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder expectations. The Director will lead initiatives across environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and corporate governance, driving measurable impact and enhancing our reputation as a responsible energy producer. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement Suncor's comprehensive sustainability and ESG strategy, integrating it into core business operations and decision-making processes.
  • Lead the preparation and publication of annual ESG reports, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and adherence to international reporting standards (e.g., SASB, GRI, TCFD).
  • Monitor emerging ESG trends, regulations, and stakeholder expectations, advising senior leadership on potential impacts and strategic responses.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., operations, finance, legal, investor relations) to embed ESG considerations across the organization.
  • Oversee the development and tracking of key performance indicators (KPIs) related to ESG goals, reporting progress to executive management and the Board of Directors.
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including investors, NGOs, industry groups, and communities, to communicate Suncor's ESG performance and commitments.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities for sustainability-related innovation, technology adoption, and process improvements.
  • Manage a team of sustainability professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Lead due diligence for ESG risks and opportunities in potential partnerships, acquisitions, and divestitures.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in sustainability, ESG, or corporate social responsibility roles, preferably within the energy or heavy industry sector.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful ESG strategies and programs.
  • In-depth knowledge of global ESG reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD) and relevant environmental regulations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of engaging diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical capabilities and a data-driven approach to problem-solving.
  • Master's degree in Environmental Science, Business Administration, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certification in sustainability (e.g., LEED AP, CESCP, ESG investing).
  • Experience in change management and influencing organizational culture towards sustainability goals.
  • Familiarity with Canadian regulatory environment and indigenous relations pertaining to resource development.
  • Strong network within the sustainability and ESG professional community.
