Job Description

Are you looking to kickstart your career in civil engineering? The Town of Banff is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our Public Works team as a Trainee Civil Engineering Assistant. This entry-level position is perfect for someone with no prior experience in civil engineering but a strong desire to learn and contribute to their community. You will receive comprehensive, paid training, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of municipal engineering, from infrastructure design and maintenance to project management support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Civil Engineers and Technicians with project planning, design, and execution.
  • Conduct basic field inspections, surveys, and data collection under supervision.
  • Support in preparing engineering drawings, reports, and documentation.
  • Learn and apply municipal standards, specifications, and safety protocols.
  • Participate in site visits to monitor construction progress and quality.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including organizing project files and scheduling meetings.
  • Operate and maintain basic engineering equipment.
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure project alignment and success.

Required Skills

  • Eagerness and strong aptitude to learn civil engineering principles and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical ability to perform field work in various weather conditions and terrains.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Some exposure to technical drawing or mapping software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArcGIS) is a plus, but not required.
  • Interest in public infrastructure and community development.
