Job Description

The City of Rio Rancho is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Trainee Weights & Measures Inspector. This entry-level position is perfect for someone looking to start a fulfilling career in public service. No prior experience in weights and measures is required, as comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided to equip you with all the necessary skills and knowledge. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of commercial measuring devices and packaged goods, protecting consumers and promoting fair trade within our community. This is a hands-on role that involves fieldwork and direct interaction with businesses across Rio Rancho.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undergo extensive training to understand state and local weights and measures laws and regulations.
  • Assist senior inspectors in conducting routine inspections and testing of commercial weighing and measuring devices, such as scales, fuel pumps, and meters.
  • Learn to identify and report non-compliant devices or practices.
  • Participate in checking the accuracy of pre-packaged commodities to ensure correct labeling and quantity.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and investigations.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with business owners and managers regarding inspection findings and regulatory requirements.
  • Operate and maintain specialized inspection equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members to achieve departmental goals and ensure compliance.

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Aptitude for mechanical or technical tasks.
