Job Description
We are seeking a highly detail-oriented and meticulous Virtual Proofreader to join our team, focusing specifically on self-published books submitted through Kindle Direct Publishing. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for meticulously reviewing manuscripts for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation issues, formatting inconsistencies, and general typos before they reach our global readership. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with a keen eye for detail and a passion for language to contribute to the success of independent authors. Full training will be provided to ensure you are equipped with the necessary tools and understanding of KDP-specific guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive proofreading of diverse genres of self-published books (fiction, non-fiction, memoir, etc.) to identify and correct errors.
- Verify proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and syntax according to standard English conventions.
- Ensure consistency in formatting, style, and terminology throughout the manuscript.
- Identify and correct instances of word misuse, awkward phrasing, and unclear sentences.
- Utilize digital proofreading tools and software efficiently.
- Adhere to established style guides and KDP submission guidelines.
- Provide clear, concise, and constructive feedback on identified errors.
- Manage multiple proofreading projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
Required Skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and a keen eye for typographical errors.
- Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a virtual environment.
- Proficiency in using digital documents (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs, PDF annotation tools).
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Basic computer literacy and comfort with online collaboration tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with various style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, AP Stylebook).
- Prior experience with proofreading or editing, even in a volunteer or academic capacity.
