Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Welding Inspector / Metallurgist to join our Quality Assurance team in Indianapolis. This critical role involves ensuring the integrity and quality of welding processes and metallurgical components used in our world-class transmission systems. The successful candidate will perform detailed inspections, conduct material analysis, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our manufacturing standards. Key Responsibilities
- Perform visual, dimensional, and non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections on welded components and assemblies in accordance with industry codes, standards, and internal specifications.
- Review and approve Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
- Conduct metallurgical analysis, including microstructural examination, hardness testing, and failure analysis, to determine root causes of defects and recommend corrective actions.
- Monitor welding processes, ensuring compliance with specified parameters, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and supply chain teams to address quality issues and implement preventive measures.
- Maintain accurate documentation of inspection results, material test reports, and corrective actions.
- Provide technical guidance and training to welding personnel and other team members on best practices and quality standards.
- Participate in internal and external audits to ensure adherence to ISO, ASME, and other relevant quality management systems.
Required Skills
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent international certification.
- Strong understanding of various welding processes (e.g., GMAW, GTAW, SMAW, SAW) and their applications.
- Proficiency in non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as VT, PT, MT, UT, and RT film interpretation.
- Knowledge of metallurgical principles, material science, heat treatment, and material properties.
- Familiarity with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, AWS, ISO).
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in English (verbal and written).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Welding Engineering, or a related technical field.
- ASNT Level II or III certification in multiple NDT methods.
- Experience with advanced metallurgical characterization techniques.
- Prior experience in the automotive, heavy equipment, or defense industry.
- Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) and quality improvement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Lean).
