Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and culturally aware Aboriginal Health Liaison to join our team within State Health Services in Norwood. This vital role focuses on improving access to health services, promoting positive health outcomes, and enhancing the overall experience for Aboriginal patients and their families. You will act as a crucial link between Aboriginal communities, patients, and health service providers, ensuring culturally appropriate care and communication are consistently delivered. This position plays a pivotal role in advocating for patient needs, navigating complex health systems, and contributing to the development of culturally sensitive health practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide culturally appropriate support, advocacy, and liaison services for Aboriginal patients and their families within the health system.
- Facilitate communication and understanding between Aboriginal patients/families and healthcare providers.
- Assist Aboriginal patients in navigating hospital and community health services, including appointments, referrals, and discharge planning.
- Advocate for the cultural safety and specific health needs of Aboriginal patients.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of culturally sensitive health programs and policies.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal communities and relevant community organisations.
- Provide cultural advice and education to health service staff to enhance cultural competency.
- Participate in relevant committees and working groups focused on Aboriginal health.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to reports as required.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal cultures, societies, and health issues.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with Aboriginal communities, patients, and healthcare professionals.
- Proven ability to advocate on behalf of patients and navigate complex systems.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to cultural safety and continuous learning.
- Current driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications in Aboriginal Health, Community Services, Social Work, or a related field.
- Previous experience in a health liaison, advocacy, or community engagement role, particularly within the Aboriginal community.
- Knowledge of the South Australian health system.
