Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Reptile / Exotic Pet Breeder Assistant to join our specialized animal care team. This entry-level position offers a unique opportunity to work directly with a diverse range of reptiles and exotic animals, supporting their breeding, care, and welfare. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for animals, a willingness to learn, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of animal husbandry and safety. Full training will be provided to ensure success in this specialized role.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior breeders and animal care specialists with daily care routines for various reptiles and exotic pets, including feeding, watering, and enclosure cleaning.
- Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any unusual observations or concerns to senior staff immediately.
- Prepare and maintain breeding habitats, ensuring optimal conditions for successful reproduction and offspring development.
- Assist with the handling of adult reptiles and exotic pets for health checks, transfers, and breeding purposes.
- Maintain meticulous records of animal diet, growth, behavior, breeding cycles, and offspring development.
- Sanitize equipment and enclosures in accordance with established safety and hygiene protocols.
- Support the care of hatchlings and juvenile animals, including specialized feeding and monitoring.
- Participate in facility maintenance and general upkeep of the reptile and exotic animal areas.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols for working with specialized animal populations.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Profound passion for animals, particularly reptiles and exotic species.
- Strong willingness to learn and follow detailed instructions.
- Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform duties requiring lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and working in various environmental conditions.
- Reliable and punctual attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or paid experience with animals (e.g., pet stores, animal shelters, farms, zoos).
- Basic knowledge of animal husbandry practices.
- Enrollment in or completion of courses in animal science, biology, zoology, or related fields.
