Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and proactive School Grounds Caretaker / Handyman to join our team, offering term-time work options to align with school holidays. This vital role ensures the school’s grounds and facilities are well-maintained, safe, and presentable for students, staff, and visitors throughout the academic year. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks ranging from general groundskeeping to minor repairs and maintenance, playing a key part in the daily operation and upkeep of our school environment. This position is perfect for someone who enjoys practical work outdoors and has a keen eye for detail, valuing a consistent schedule during term-time.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general groundskeeping duties including lawn mowing, weeding, pruning, and leaf blowing.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of school grounds, pathways, and outdoor common areas.
- Conduct minor repairs and maintenance tasks on school property, including fences, playground equipment, and outdoor furniture.
- Assist with seasonal tasks such as snow removal and salting pathways during winter months.
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment safely and efficiently.
- Inspect facilities and grounds regularly for hazards, damage, or maintenance needs.
- Support the setup and takedown for school events as required.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Manage and organize maintenance supplies and tools.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in groundskeeping or general handyman work (1 year minimum).
- Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, snow blowers).
- Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of minor carpentry, plumbing, or electrical repairs.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License.
- Previous experience in a school or institutional setting.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Knowledge of local plant life and basic landscaping principles.
