Job Description

The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Forensic Services Bureau is offering an invaluable opportunity for an aspiring forensic scientist to gain hands-on exposure to crime lab operations. This internship focuses on shadowing experienced forensic professionals across various disciplines, observing real-world case processing, laboratory techniques, and the critical role of forensic science in law enforcement. This is an entry-level position designed for students with little to no prior professional experience, providing foundational insights into a forensic career path.

Key Responsibilities

  • Observe forensic scientists performing analyses in various sections (e.g., Biology/DNA, Chemistry, Latent Prints).
  • Shadow crime scene investigators during simulated or actual evidence collection processes, if permitted.
  • Assist with basic laboratory tasks such as organizing supplies, preparing reagents, and maintaining equipment under direct supervision.
  • Review case files and reports to understand the workflow of forensic investigations.
  • Participate in team meetings and discussions to learn about case strategies and expert testimony preparation.
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols and ethical guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's program in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Chemistry, Biology, or a related scientific field.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and observational skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
