Job Description
Are you a detail-oriented individual with a passion for healthcare and technology? Alberta Health Services is seeking a motivated Health Informatics & Data Intern specializing in Electronic Records to join our team in Medicine Hat. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in managing, analyzing, and optimizing electronic health records (EHR) systems. You will support our efforts to ensure data integrity, improve data accessibility, and contribute to projects that enhance patient care through effective information management. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to launch a career in health informatics within a dynamic healthcare environment. Full training will be provided to help you succeed in this critical area.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the maintenance and validation of electronic health record (EHR) data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Support the generation of routine reports and data extracts for various departmental needs.
- Participate in projects aimed at improving data quality, system usability, and workflow efficiency within EHR systems.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals and IT staff to understand data requirements and technical challenges.
- Contribute to the documentation of data management processes and system configurations.
- Learn and apply best practices in health information management and data privacy.
- Troubleshoot basic data-related issues and escalate complex problems to senior staff.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Health Informatics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of database concepts and data management principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and healthcare systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner, Meditech) or healthcare information systems.
- Basic knowledge of SQL or other data querying languages.
- Understanding of healthcare data standards and privacy regulations (e.g., FOIP, HIA).
- Previous exposure to data analysis or reporting tools.
