Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Family Law & Mediation Intern to join our team in Lakeland, Florida. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity for students pursuing a career in law, social work, or related fields to gain practical experience in family law and alternative dispute resolution within a non-profit setting. The intern will assist our attorneys and mediators in providing critical legal services to underserved populations, focusing on family-related matters such as divorce, child custody, domestic violence, and mediation processes. This is an entry-level position where extensive training and mentorship will be provided. You will contribute directly to our mission of ensuring justice and stability for families in need.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist staff attorneys with legal research, document preparation, and case management related to family law matters.
  • Support mediators by preparing materials, observing mediation sessions, and assisting with post-mediation documentation.
  • Conduct client intake interviews, gather relevant information, and maintain confidential client files.
  • Draft legal correspondence, pleadings, and other court documents under attorney supervision.
  • Participate in client meetings, court hearings, and community outreach events as needed.
  • Organize and maintain legal resources, databases, and educational materials.
  • Provide administrative support to the legal team as required.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in law, paralegal studies, social work, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in family law, mediation, and public interest work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and a commitment to helping others.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer experience in a legal aid clinic or non-profit organization.
  • Familiarity with legal research platforms (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a significant plus.
