Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Prosecutorial & District Attorney Intern to join our team in Evanston. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity for aspiring legal professionals to gain firsthand experience in the day-to-day operations of a major prosecutorial office. Under the supervision of experienced Assistant State’s Attorneys, interns will assist with legal research, document preparation, and courtroom procedures, contributing to the pursuit of justice in our community. This is an entry-level position designed to provide comprehensive training and exposure to the criminal justice system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research on various statutes, case law, and legal precedents.
  • Assist Assistant State's Attorneys with trial preparation, including organizing evidence and drafting legal documents.
  • Observe court proceedings, including arraignments, bond hearings, motions, and trials.
  • Prepare summaries of legal documents, reports, and witness statements.
  • Assist in managing case files and maintaining organized records.
  • Collaborate with legal staff on ongoing investigations and cases.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions to enhance understanding of prosecutorial duties.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Juris Doctor (JD) program or recent graduate.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in legal research tools and databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and ethical conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in an office environment or volunteer work in the legal field.
  • Familiarity with Illinois state laws and criminal procedure.
  • Proficiency in Spanish or other languages relevant to the community served.
