Our Wildlife Conservation Officers play a critical role in enforcing environmental conservation laws, protecting wildlife, and educating the public across the state, including the Binghamton region.

Job Description

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Trainee Wildlife Conservation Officers. This is a unique, government-funded opportunity to embark on a rewarding career in environmental law enforcement, even if you have no prior experience. We provide comprehensive, paid training to equip you with all the knowledge and skills necessary to become a certified Wildlife Conservation Officer, dedicated to preserving our state’s invaluable ecosystems and wildlife populations. This role offers an immersive experience in field operations, community engagement, and the vital work of conservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all phases of a rigorous training program, including classroom instruction, physical fitness, and field exercises.
  • Learn and understand federal, state, and local environmental conservation laws and regulations.
  • Assist seasoned Wildlife Conservation Officers in routine patrols, investigations, and enforcement activities.
  • Engage with the public to provide information, promote conservation practices, and respond to inquiries.
  • Assist in collecting data related to wildlife populations, habitats, and environmental incidents.
  • Develop skills in wildlife identification, habitat assessment, and evidence collection.
  • Maintain physical fitness standards required for field work and law enforcement duties.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Strong desire to protect natural resources and wildlife.
  • Ability to learn and apply complex legal statutes and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in various outdoor conditions.
  • Valid New York State driver's license upon hire.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and psychological evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in environmental science, criminal justice, natural resource management, or a related field (not required, but a plus).
  • Experience with outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, or hiking.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
