Job Description

The City of Springfield, Missouri is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our Animal Welfare Department as an Animal Control Officer Trainee. This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for those with no prior experience in animal control. We provide extensive on-the-job training, equipping you with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a certified Animal Control Officer. You will work outdoors in various weather conditions, responding to calls, assisting animals in need, and educating the public on animal welfare best practices. This role requires compassion, physical stamina, and a commitment to public service.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all required training programs and on-the-job instruction.
- Learn to safely capture, handle, and transport domestic and wild animals in various situations.
- Respond to citizen complaints regarding stray, injured, or deceased animals.
- Assist in investigations of animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment.
- Learn to enforce local and state animal control ordinances and laws.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, animal safety, and local regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, animal intakes, and dispositions.
- Assist with the care and feeding of animals housed at the animal shelter, as needed.
- Operate and maintain assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and community organizations.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Missouri Driver's License with a good driving record.
- Ability to learn and apply animal control procedures and regulations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact respectfully with diverse publics.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, climb, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Compassionate attitude towards animals.
- Ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
- Demonstrated commitment to public service and safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working or volunteering with animals.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Familiarity with the Springfield, Missouri area.
