Job Description
Algoma University is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Braille Transcription & Accessibility Intern to join our dedicated team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to our commitment to accessibility by assisting in the conversion of educational materials into Braille and other accessible formats. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in Braille transcription software, accessibility guidelines, and the use of specialized equipment. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about making a tangible difference in the lives of visually impaired students and enhancing inclusivity within an academic setting. Full training will be provided to ensure success in this role, no prior Braille experience is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the transcription of academic documents, textbooks, and course materials into Braille format using specialized software and equipment.
- Proofread Braille documents for accuracy, proper formatting, and adherence to established Braille standards.
- Support the creation of other accessible formats, such as large print, audio descriptions, and digital text files, as needed.
- Maintain organized records of transcription projects, deadlines, and completed materials.
- Collaborate with accessibility services staff to ensure timely delivery of accessible materials to students.
- Research and stay updated on best practices and emerging technologies in Braille transcription and accessibility.
- Assist with general administrative tasks related to accessibility services.
Required Skills
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to learn and adapt to new software and technologies quickly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A genuine interest in accessibility and supporting students with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with accessibility standards or an understanding of diverse learning needs.
- Basic knowledge of different file formats and digital document conversion.
- Enrollment in or completion of a post-secondary program in a related field (e.g., Library and Information Technician, Social Work, Education, Communications).
