Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and reliable City Street Sweeper Operator to join our Environmental Services team. This vital role involves operating specialised street sweeping vehicles to ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of our city’s roads, pavements, and public spaces. You’ll be part of a team committed to maintaining high environmental standards, contributing directly to the health and aesthetic appeal of Newcastle upon Tyne. The position requires an ability to work early morning shifts, as much of the work needs to be completed before peak traffic hours. Full training on specific equipment will be provided, but prior experience with heavy vehicles is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently operate street sweeping vehicles and associated equipment.
  • Perform daily pre-operation checks, post-operation cleaning, and basic maintenance on vehicles.
  • Follow designated routes and schedules to ensure comprehensive street cleaning coverage across Newcastle upon Tyne.
  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions, defects, or safety hazards immediately.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs and records of work completed, including areas covered and materials collected.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, council policies, and environmental guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure operational efficiency and service quality.
  • Undertake manual street cleaning tasks as required, including litter picking and bin emptying in designated areas.
  • Interact professionally with the public and represent Newcastle City Council with a positive attitude.

Required Skills

  • Valid UK Driving Licence, Category C (HGV Class 2) or equivalent, or willingness to obtain with council support.
  • Proven experience (minimum 12 months) operating heavy vehicles, plant machinery, or similar equipment.
  • Ability to work early morning shifts, including some weekends and public holidays as per rota.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety procedures and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Physical fitness and capability to perform manual tasks and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • A responsible and proactive approach to work, demonstrating reliability and punctuality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specific experience operating street sweeping vehicles or similar municipal cleansing equipment.
  • Relevant vocational qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations or Waste Management).
  • Local knowledge of Newcastle upon Tyne's road network and geographical areas.
  • Basic mechanical understanding for minor fault diagnosis and maintenance tasks.
