Job Description

The Laredo Fine Arts Museum & Conservation Center is seeking a dedicated and skilled Fine Art Conservator / Restorer to join our esteemed conservation team. This pivotal role involves the examination, documentation, and treatment of a wide range of artworks within our permanent collection, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. The Conservator will be responsible for assessing the condition of art objects, proposing and executing appropriate conservation treatments, and contributing to preventive conservation strategies to ensure the long-term preservation of our cultural heritage. This position requires a meticulous approach, advanced technical skills, and a strong understanding of art historical contexts and conservation ethics. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough examinations and analyses of artworks to assess their condition, material composition, and previous treatments.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive conservation treatment proposals, adhering to ethical standards and best practices.
  • Perform delicate and precise treatments on various media, including cleaning, consolidation, structural repairs, inpainting, and surface restoration.
  • Maintain detailed written and photographic documentation of all examination findings, treatment procedures, and materials used.
  • Collaborate with curators, registrars, and other museum staff on exhibition planning, art loans, and collection management.
  • Advise on environmental controls, display methods, and storage solutions for optimal preventive conservation.
  • Participate in research projects related to conservation science and art materials.
  • Stay abreast of new developments, techniques, and materials in the field of art conservation.
  • Contribute to the training and mentoring of junior conservators or interns as needed.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Art Conservation from a recognized program.
  • Minimum of 3 years of post-graduate experience in fine art conservation within a museum or reputable conservation studio.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the conservation of paintings, sculptures, or works on paper (specialization preferred but generalist skills valued).
  • Proficiency in scientific analytical techniques relevant to art conservation.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of art history, materials science, and conservation ethics.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for documentation and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialization in a particular medium (e.g., Old Master paintings, contemporary sculpture).
  • Experience with digital imaging and advanced analytical tools.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, given our location.
  • Portfolio demonstrating a range of conservation treatments.
  • Experience with grant writing or project management in a conservation context.
