Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fine Art Conservator / Restorer to join our expert team in Cambridge, MA. This full-time, on-site position offers an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse range of artistic masterpieces, applying advanced conservation techniques to ensure their longevity. The successful candidate will be instrumental in executing comprehensive treatment plans, conducting thorough condition assessments, and contributing to the studio’s reputation for exceptional quality. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive condition assessments, technical examinations, and historical research of artworks.
- Develop and propose ethical and effective conservation treatment plans in consultation with clients and senior conservators.
- Execute hands-on conservation and restoration treatments, including cleaning, consolidation, repair, and aesthetic reintegration.
- Produce detailed written and photographic documentation for all examination and treatment procedures.
- Advise clients and stakeholders on preventive conservation strategies, environmental controls, and safe handling practices.
- Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and complex conservation challenges.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment, adhering to studio protocols and safety standards.
- Stay abreast of the latest developments, research, and technologies in the field of art conservation.
Required Skills
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Art Conservation, Fine Art Restoration, or a closely related discipline from an accredited program.
- A minimum of four years (48 months) of professional experience in fine art conservation or restoration.
- Demonstrable proficiency in a broad range of conservation techniques applicable to paintings, sculptures, paper, or other fine art media.
- In-depth knowledge of art history, materials science, and current conservation ethics and methodologies.
- Exceptional manual dexterity, meticulous attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documentation, reporting, and client interaction.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Eligibility and willingness to be sponsored for a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) if applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialization in a specific artistic medium (e.g., Old Master paintings, contemporary sculpture, textiles, works on paper).
- Experience with advanced analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), or microscopy.
- Membership in professional conservation organizations (e.g., American Institute for Conservation (AIC), Institute of Conservation (ICON)).
- Proficiency in additional languages relevant to art historical research or international clientele.
