Job Description

As a Government Women & Children’s Shelter Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for women and children experiencing vulnerability. This secure position involves direct interaction with shelter residents, assisting with daily operations, and ensuring the well-being and security of all individuals under our care. You will be a vital part of a compassionate team dedicated to helping individuals rebuild their lives with dignity and respect. Full training will be provided for this essential community role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support and compassionate assistance to shelter residents, including women and children.
  • Assist with the daily operations of the shelter, including maintaining cleanliness and order.
  • Monitor shelter premises to ensure a safe and secure environment for residents and staff.
  • Distribute meals, supplies, and other essential items as needed.
  • Help residents access resources and services, such as transportation, medical care, and educational opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports of daily activities and resident interactions.
  • Enforce shelter rules and guidelines respectfully and consistently.
  • Respond to resident inquiries and provide crisis intervention support when necessary, escalating to senior staff as appropriate.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions to enhance service delivery.

Required Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and communication.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Resilience and ability to remain calm in challenging situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or work experience in social services, caregiving, or community support.
  • Knowledge of local community resources in Flagstaff, AZ.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
